Thematic tourn headlines misleading.

Technically, not just the thematic ones. For example, the "hourly hyperbullet" does not happen hourly and should be "the occasional hyperbullet". Indeed, the "hourly bullet" is about every HALF hour and should really be "the twice-hourly bullet".

Not that it really matters...
I noted for eample "Scotch game Steinitz Version" is announced as only "Scotch game" That can be misleading since Steinitz version is a pecuiiar subline of Scotch, not even very common. I withdrew the post since STeinitz version appear in the specific tourn page. However it would be nice maybe if announced even in the headline, since a peculiar sub-line alter the tourneys theme severe.
@blackzombie What is the point of names of thematic tournaments? I don't know the variations by name so I just play them as a "from position" games. I don't even know what variations are common and what are not.
How important is it to memorize the names of variations and how common they are?
#4 What you say is your views. That's not necessarily anyones.

Reasoning like you is like saying "What's the point of a chess server. I never play chess." for a person that doesn't play chess.
@blackzombie I have noticed this as well- the starting positions of many of the thematic tournaments do not correspond accurately with the titles. For e.g I entered a Kings Gambit Accepted game to find that the starting position did not follow from 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4..... As far as I could tell there was no indication of the specific line being the starting position.

@Tangelo777 Completely irrelevant response, also if you play "from position" games then you have answered your own question. And note below for the rest of your bewilderment.

The names are used to identify the positions, which are part of your decision to play in the tournament . I do not know why specific lines are chosen over the actual starting positions, but at the least the tournaments should be more accurately titled as they are misleading and can lead you to playing a game from a position you did not want to enter!
Most people know all the basic openings and positions. I mean I can set up a Sicilian dragon yugoslav attack and the Russian variation of the gruenfeld. Those are all common openings and I think everyone knows those. Its general chess opening knowledge but you don't have to know how to play them all. There are some very strange openings that I do not know the variations of. Such as the grob. I can tell you the grob starts with g4 but I know it has variations but I can't tell you what they are.
@chessanalyst
You should find all the names of variations of grob's attack in wikipedia. This opening starts with 1. g4 severely weakening the white's king side, making it very easy for black to win. This opening

There is a nice video on youtube about how to play grob correctly.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS6ctyiyT1Q
The game goes as follows:
1. g4 e5 2. f3 Qh4#
Also the Grob opening is featured in top 10 worst openings for white video
www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-D2v_rS30E
It's in the 8th place.
So, if you are white and you need to lose the game as fast as possible, the Grob is the best opening for you!
Hope it helps!
Yes I don't need to know the grob. But isn't it common knowledge to chess players all the decent openings and variations? Shouldn't I be able to ask a random player that is decent say 1800+ online and they could tell me without using the opening book or internet what the Breyer Ruy Lopez is? And what the anti marshall is? I mean all those are just common for everyone to know? And yes I agree the grob is terrible. I was using it as an example of an opening you really don't need to know variations for.
Decent 1800+ online chess players are good in tactics, opening principles (eg control the center), chess strategy ( good coordination of pieces), decent endgame knowledge (like checkmate with king and rook vs king). They also do not blunder on every move (it's ok to blunder sometimes but not on every move). This should be enough to get 1800 rating here. Memorizing names of variations is not necessary to get 1800 lichess rating. It may be necessary to get rating of 2000 and higher though.
