DGT Support

Hi there,

will there be support for DGT - Boards one day?

Unless someone wants to make a PC client, support for them is completely impossible. Even then it is legally shaky ground (DGT boards are patented to death) so it will not be official.
Well there already are projects like this: http://dgtdrv.sourceforge.net/

Of course, you should in principle also be able to retrieve the moves in windows.

It would need lichess to accept simple textmoves as input, though.
Also, the position seems to be retrievable as FEN, which could be fed into lichess. If someone buys me a DGT board and it is ok with thibault for lichess to retrieve text input, I will look into this. :)
Maybe a nice idea, but that also sounds like it opens the door for very, VERY easy exploits. :p
Could be useful if lichess wanted to stream matches...
But seriously: Why are those board that expensive? Aren't there cheaper alternative, for example coupling a relatively cheap chess computer via usb?
Well, i have one but the drivers are flimsy and unstable. It runs under Fritz and Babaschess and ICC. You always have a huge time lag when playing with it. That's a downside.

@zitterbart: There has been a wooden board computer, the Novag Citrine. It connected via serial interface with the PC. You could use it under the Arena GUI and playing against an engine of your choice. But AFAIK it is not produced anymore.

The DGT Boards are expensive, but they are high quality. But the software... Hmm, well...
Well I see that the DGT boards are for people who like high quality boards. But what about guys like me who just want to move some PVC pieces from time to time and don't care about rosewood?

To be honest I cannot believe there are no cheap alternatives for the average chess player which are still in production. But this seems in fact to be the case.

I bet the software of the DGT boards would be better if there was more competition in the market. In fact I would expect those chessboards are more simple controllers than a computer keyboard or mouse. Maybe there is some logic to keep the different kinds of pieces like black, white, king, queen, bishop etc. apart, but still ...
