About me

Hello, I am FIDE Master Dalton Perrine and I want to help guide you on the road to chess mastery! I have been coaching chess online full-time since March 2014. I personalize all of my lessons with my students in order to evaluate your abilities and make a unique program for things to pinpoint (both weaknesses and strengths) in your game and help you to raise your overall chess level and understanding. I get a lot of enjoyment out of teaching chess and seeing my students improve and I would like to help you do the same :-)

Playing experience

-USCF National Master since 2011
-FIDE Master since 2014
-Started playing chess competitively at age 10, now 29 years old with 19 years of experience
-Have defeated multiple Grandmasters in OTB tournaments

Teaching experience

-Full-time online chess coach since March 2014
-Hundreds of different students have participated in thousands of individual lessons
-Students have won many tournaments and raised their ratings hundreds of points
-One student got 3rd place in the u2000 section of the 2014 Millionaire Chess Open for $10,000
-Assistant Director and one of the Lead Instructors of Chess University's Prodigy Program which began in November 2014
-Have coached hundreds of online group lessons through the Prodigy Program
-Owner of NextLevelChessCoaching.com website

Other experiences

-I have written many articles and blogs for both Chess.com and iChess.net
-I did a challenge in June 2015 to raise a secondary account on Chess.com from a starting blitz rating of 800 to 2200 in one month and streamed it all on Twitch with running commentary. Unfortunately life situations got in the way and I had to quit around the rating of 2050 but all 100+ of those games can be found on my YouTube channel
-I plan on resuming activity on my YouTube and Twitch channels in the near future!

Best skills

I feel that I am easy to talk to and get along with and enjoy speaking with students about things outside of chess from time-to-time. I even have some students added on Facebook :-)

I am able to pinpoint (repeated) problems that you are facing in your games and work my best to help you fix your weaknesses so that you can play stronger chess.

For example: One of my students had been having trouble because of his passive pieces in the endgame which had been leading to some unnecessary draws/losses. We were able to recognize this problem from analyzing his recent tournament games and I sent him resources to help give him tips to improve the activity of his pieces even if it means sacrificing some material at times. Between lessons, I found and created different positions where the student needed to activate his pieces well in order to win different game situations. By working on this in our lessons together the student has improved at this facet of chess and his play in these kinds of endgame positions has improved considerably which has lead to a rating increase

I also ask students lots of questions throughout every lesson. I want to get into your mind and understand your thinking process in different positions so that I can improve and fine-tune it

Teaching methodology

I feel that everyone has the ability to improve at chess in a big way but this relies on the student's work ethic to make it happen! All of my lessons with students are personalized to their specific needs so that they can benefit the most and improve quickly. No cookie-cutter lessons!

The first lesson will consist of reviewing some of your recent games (preferably over-the-board tournament games) in order to help me to get an idea of your overall ability and pinpoint places where you could improve. Usually there is a common theme throughout your games that can be worked on and fixed. Future lessons would expound on these points and I would help you with other weak areas in your game as well. These weaknesses and strengths are evaluated periodically as the student grows. At the end of each lesson I send an email with the notes from the lesson as well as a personalized study guide and homework for you to look at before our next lesson together.

Lessons are taught using the lichess.org study tool and we will communicate through Zoom or on Skype. Message me on lichess.org or email me at NextLevelChessCoaching@gmail.com to get your first trial lesson set up!
