Maybe set the 'following' functionality so that the person being 'followed' has the ability to accept/decline.

I got a bunch of people following me who I don't even know. I couldn't care less until I realized they could tell when I'm signed on.

I want an Allow/Decline functionality for when someone want to add me on their list.

I know the 'follower' could just as easily search in the Players section, but atleast it creates a hassle.
Maybe you could also give an option to the player to decide if they want to appear on the 'search' or not.

I signed up to keep a track of my rating, nothing more.

Please think about it.
Probably the best would be a new setting that prevents anybody from following you.
I think the only problem with the "followers list" is this: Why put it on a prime location, on the front page? On other chess servers players hardly notice that they have followers. In one of them I always had for many years this message on login: "You arrival was noticed by such and such player". But many players don`t even notice that message.
So, my suggestion is: Just put an option (on preferences) to see or not that list of players. I have a small list and it`s growing. I would check "don`t see followers list" as soon as it was available, and never would give another thought about it.
Another option would be putting a link "followers", maybe between "players" and "teams". Lots of players (like me) would never click there, so it would not be so scary.
Good ideas, but there is one risk: feature bloat. There is such a thing as too many settings.
You can now prevent people from following you from your setting page: http://en.lichess.org/account/preferences

I'm not too afraid of setting bloat as long as they remain hidden in the settings page. About code bloat, well, that's my problem. And so far the codebase remains totally maintainable. On server-side, that is.
Cool. I was hoping for a more 'filtered' approach, rather then an 'everyone or no one' approach as I do have 1 legitimate follower.

But thanks. This will do.
Another idea might be the option to log in "invisibly", so people following you wouldn't know you were online. If you don't want anyone to be notified that you're online ever, you would just log in invisibly all the time.
hello, it's exactly the same as having no follower. Which, from the program point of view, is simpler and more efficient.
